Summary

The South Brent Crime Prevention Panel wish to present a petition to the Authority on police numbers in Brent.

1. The South Brent Crime Prevention Panel have submitted a petition bearing nearly 4,000 signatures in the following terms: "We the undersigned, being residents of and/or working in the London Borough of Brent, do petition the Metropolitan Police Authority to make urgent arrangements to substantially increase the establishment strength of police officers in this borough to enable them to provide the service to which we are entitled."

2. The Chair and Secretary of the Crime Prevention Panel have indicated that they will be attending the meeting to present the petition. Under the Authority's Standing Orders, petitioners may address the Authority on their petition for up to five minutes.

3. In December the Authority agreed the new Resource Allocation Formula, which was the result of extensive development and consultation. Under the Resource Allocation Formula Brent received 630 officers as against a maximum strength between March and October 2001 of 604 officers.

4. As one of the original boroughs included in Operation Safer Streets there has been a significant level of activity over recent months aimed at tackling street crime, as reported elsewhere on the agenda, and this will be continuing for the rest of the year.
