Link Member Appointments
Report: 12
Date: 29 July 2004
By: Commissioner
Summary
This report invites the Authority to appoint borough link members.
A. Recommendation
1. That the Authority makes appointments to the 32 borough link member roles
2. That a report be put to the next meeting of the Authority proposing minimum standards and expectations for the link member role.
B. Supporting information
1. An important part of the role of MPA members is the borough link role. Members act as a two way link with the 32 London borough Councils, borough policing, other agencies, local organisations and communities, both to listen to and bring their policing issues to the MPA and to represent the MPA locally.
2. The guidelines for the link member role were last reviewed in early 2001 and so the programme for MPA Members’ Awayday on 20 July included this as one aspect of planning for the MPA’s second term. At the Awayday members reaffirmed the importance of the link role, whilst recognising that the demands on link members are potentially enormous, especially now that the MPA is a statutory partner on the 32 borough crime and disorder reduction partnerships. It was agreed that minimum standards and expectations should be developed. There will be a further report on this to the September meeting of the Authority.
3. However, it is important to have a decision on the appointment of link members now, so that boroughs are not left without a link member over the summer.
C. Race and equality impact
There are no particular issues with regard to the actual appointment of members to link boroughs. The further report reviewing the role itself will address the race and equality issues.
