Summary

To update the Sub-committee as to the work of the Professional Standards Unit in moving forward the work on dip sampling of closed complaints and conduct files.

1. The Sub-committee has been considering the dip sampling process in its earlier meetings this year. Members at the 29 July Sub-committee meeting advised that before commencing dip sampling of MPS closed complaint and conduct matters they would like to be aware of the quality assurance processes in place at the MPS as well as how the learning from these cases was disseminated throughout the MPS. To this end, the MPS a further report to this meeting sets out the MPS quality assurance processes for the Sub-Committee to consider.

2. In addition, officers of the Professional Standards Unit have:

2.1 Met with the Chair of this Sub-Committee and Deputy Chief Executive to agree the next steps;

2.2 Further to that meeting, met the Director of Professional Standards at the MPS to discuss dip sampling, and requested comments on the dip sampling protocol and simplified criteria in order to get an agreed process for this piece of work.

3. The simplified criteria is attached to this report. Comments on the protocol will be provided to Members when received.

4. Members are asked to provide views further to the report from the Director of Professional Standards as to the next steps in the dip sampling process.
