Chair's update
Report: 4
Date: 23 January 2001
By: Chair
Summary
This brief report is to inform members of the public of the initiatives that I, and members of the CDO Committee, have been involved in since the last meeting of this committee.
A. Supporting information
Members of the CDO Committee and I have been involved in a range of meetings and initiatives, some of which are indicated in this report.
1. MPS internal review of complaints raised by the Lindo family.
I have continued to receive regular briefings from Commander Tarique Ghaffur on the MPS internal inquiry on this case. The recent features in the national press have highlighted the level of interest in the outcome of the inquiry. I am in regular communication with the Borough commander of Haringey and am mindful of the local sensitivities that this case highlights for the local black and ethnic minority communities in that area. Reshard Auladin is working with the MPS on the next steps.
The Deputy Commissioner has been invited to speak on the case of the Lindo family at the Haringey Community and Police Consultative group. I will also be in attendance at this meeting.
2. Damilola Taylor
Cecile Lothian, a member of this Committee, has continued to work with the local police and community as the investigation into the murder of Damilola Taylor continues.
3. The Virdi inquiry
The Inquiry Panel is continuing to make good progress on its work on this case.
4. Lay visiting
Cecile Lothian, who was selected as the lead member with responsibility for Lay Visiting (working with two members from other MPA committees), has provided valuable guidance to officers on a number of emerging matters with lay visiting. This role is likely to be enhanced if the Authority adopts the recommendation arising from its phase one consultation with Chairs and administrators of local panels. This matter will be discussed as agenda item 9 at this evening’s meeting.
5. Crime and Community Safety
Angela Slaven and Cecile Lothian are members of the Commissioner’s working group on youth crime diversion strategies which is specifically tasked with the responsibility of looking into issues to do with youth crime prevention.
The Association for London Government (ALG) also has a Pan London Community Safety Working Group which Angela and Cecile attend.
6. Home Office Community and Race Relations training Advisory Group.
Cindy Butts represents the Authority on this steering group that is looking at CRR training for all police services in England and Wales. She will be advising this committee on its work in this area.
7. GLA Notting Hill carnival review
A draft report is expected by the end January for consultation, and Nicholas Long, who continues to represent the MPA on this group, will be playing a leading role in representing the Authority’s views on this report.
