Summary

This report informs Members of the strategy to be adopted by the MPA Communications unit in the event of an emergency or terrorist attack in the Metropolitan Police District.

A. Recommendation

Members are asked to note the contents of this report.

B. Supporting information

1. Following the atrocities in the USA on the 11 September 2001 the MPA communications unit drew up a communications strategy (attached as Appendix 1) to be implemented in the event of a terrorist attack or civil emergency in the MPD.

2. A draft copy of the communications strategy was sent to all Members and senior management team and amendments incorporated.

3. The communications offices of the GLA, other London emergency services and relevant government offices were consulted and informed of the MPA strategy.

4. Philip Powell, Director of Communications, attends the Media sub-group of the London Resilience Committee and has presented the strategy to be integral to the Committee’s overall communications strategy.

C. Financial implications

It will also be necessary to ensure that arrangements are in hand to make any necessary urgent payments. The financial implications would only be relevant if London is subject to a terrorist attack .
