Members’ allowances and expenses 2001/02

Report: 10
Date: 6 Jan 2003
By: Clerk

Summary

This report sets out, as a matter of good practice, the payments made to members of the Authority in respect of allowances and expenses paid to members in the financial year 2001/02.

A. Recommendations

1. That this report be noted

B. Supporting information

1. It appears that, unlike local authorities, police authorities are not required to publish annually payments made to members in respect of their role on the authority. However, as a matter of good practice it is considered appropriate for the MPA to do this on an annual basis.

2. Attached as Appendix A is a summary of payments made to members in the financial year 2001/02. Efforts will be made in future years to produce this report sooner after the end of the financial year in question.

C. Equality and diversity implications

3. None.

D. Financial implications

4. None, as costs were contained within budget.

E. Background papers

None.

F. Contact details

Report author: Simon Vile, MPA.

Appendix A

Set out below are the allowances and expenses paid to members in the financial year 2001/02. In that year the allowances were paid for actual time spent on Authority business, at an hourly rate of £17. Expenses paid were those actually incurred in the course of Authority business, such as travelling expenses or telephone charges.

Allowances were only paid to the Independent and Magistrate members of the Authority. GLA members are not able to claim allowances as they receive an allowance from the GLA (though they can claim expenses incurred on MPA business).
