Scrutiny of the Metropolitan Police Service performance and practice in Stop And Search - reference from Equal Opportunities and Diversity Board
Report: 6
Date: 24 Jan 2003
By: Clerk
Summary
At its meeting on 9 January the Equal Opportunities and Diversity Board received a report on a possible scrutiny into stop and search.
A. Recommendation
The Equal Opportunities and Diversity Board recommends that the Committee considers the attached report and agrees that a scrutiny be held into stop and search.
B. Supporting information
1. At its meeting on 9 January 2003 the Board received a report which outlined proposals for the scrutiny of stop and search in the MPS. This is attached as Appendix 1.
2. The Board supported the scrutiny on the basis that its remit would be limited to the four area detailed in paragraph 7 of annex 1 to the report.
3. The Board gave preliminary outline consideration to the membership of the Panel. It was felt that this should be kept as small as possible with a suggested maximum of between six and eight members with the majority of the members to be drawn from the MPA. The Board felt it would be useful, however, for one of the panel members to be a police officer from the MPS. The Deputy Commissioner advised it might be more appropriate if this was a retired officer.
4. The Clerk will provide a further update on proposals at the meeting.
C. Equality and diversity implications
These are discussed in the attached report.
D. Financial implications
These are discussed in the attached report.
