Resolved – That the minutes of the meeting of the Co-ordination and Policing Committee held on 17 February 2003 be agreed and signed as a correct record.

103. Cost implications of policing public order events in 2002

(Agenda item 4)

The Committee considered a report by the Commissioner setting out the comparison of costs of public order events in 2002 and 2001.

Resolved  - That the report be noted.

104. Any other urgent business

(Agenda item 5)

With the agreement of the Chair, Nicholas Long raised an item of urgent business. The current inquest into a death during a joint Immigration Service/police visit had, he felt, raised some important issues. He was concerned that at the inquest a member of the Immigration Service had said that were the same operation to be conducted now, there would be no difference in the arrangements made for it. He considered that there was an urgent need for the MPS to review procedures and consider joint training between the MPA and the Immigration Service. He asked the Deputy Commissioner to consider whether such visits should continue pending a review.

The Deputy Commissioner responded that joint working between the two organisations was developing. The MPS would examine the issues – balancing community concerns and government requirements – and report back to the Co-ordination and Policing Committee in due course.

105. Exclusion of the press and public

(Agenda item 6)

RESOLVED – That the press and public be asked to leave the meeting during discussion of the remaining item of business because exempt information as defined in paragraph 9 of Schedule 12A of the Local Government Act 1972 is likely to be made known.

106. Disposal of Hounslow public order training centre

(Agenda item 7)

The Committee considered a report by the Director of Property Services reporting on bids received for this site.

RESOLVED –

  1. That the freehold interest in the Hounslow Public Order Training Centre be disposed of for a figure to be certified as representing best value on an unconditional basis; and
  2. that the Clerk be authorised to contract with the successful party provided the Treasurer is satisfied that the approvals contained in this report are met.

The meeting ended at 11.27 a.m.
