Report: 6
Date: 11 February 2005
By: Clerk
Summary
The MPS has invited the MPA to appoint members to accompany MPS visits to MPS secondees in Jordan, Sierra Leone and Bosnia.
A. Recommendations
That the Committee decides whether to appoint members to join these visits
B. Supporting information
1. An invitation has been received from the MPS for an MPA member to accompany MPS officers on fact finding and morale boosting visits to MPS officers and staff seconded abroad (one member per visit). These visits would also give the MPA a better understanding of the range of MPS activity.
2. Three trips are planned:
- Jordan: 1-4 March to visit officers training Iraqi police.
- Sierra Leone: 12-15 April. MPS officers are there as part of a UN mission monitoring and helping set up a local police force.
- Bosnia: 1-4 May or 8–11 May, depending on whether there is a General Election. Five MPS officers are part of an EU mission.
3. The MPS will meet transport and accommodation costs.
4. All members have been invited to express an interest in these visits and a number have done so. At present there are no agreed ground rules to assist the committee to make a decision. There is no specific lead member role involved. The Chair will, therefore, propose nominations at the meeting.
