Summary

This report outlines the requirements for the provision of civil litigation services.

A. Recommendations

  1. Members are asked to note the contents of this report.
  2. Members are asked to approve the request for fresh formal tender action for a replacement contract in the linked exempt report.

B. Supporting information

1. A replacement contract needs to be set in place for the provision of civil litigation services for Solicitor's branch and Accident Claims Branch. The requirement covers allegations of police malfeasance and public and employer liability litigation. The combined contract needs to be set in place to commence on the cessation of the two current contracts on 2 September 2002. The contract will be for a period of five years.

2. Legal services contracts are exempt from the requirement to advertise in the Official Journal of the European Communities. Tenders, when received, will be opened under formal purchasing rules and will be split for separate commercial and technical evaluations. The recommendation for award of contract will be placed before the committee in due course.

C. Financial implications

Financial details of the contract for the provision of civil litigation services are contained in a separate 'exempt report', to be considered in Part 2 of the Finance, Planning and Best Value Committee meeting.
