Summary

This report attaches the new Health and Safety Policy for the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) that is to be launched by the Commissioner on 14 January. It has been drawn up in full consultation with all the main stakeholders in the MPS and with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Comments by MPA members and officers have been incorporated into the Policy.

Essentially, the Policy serves as a protocol that clarifies responsibilities and accountabilities throughout the MPS in terms of compliance with health and safety legislation and will ensure that health and safety considerations are a priority in all MPS activities.

The Policy also clarifies the MPA’s responsibilities under health and safety legislation with respect to police staff, to police buildings and to visitors to those buildings.

That the Committee note the policy.

1. The Policy is attached at Appendix 1.

2. The terms of reference and membership of the MPS Health and Safety Strategic Committee are attached at Appendix 2.

C. Equality and diversity implications

The new lines of accountability, together with the higher profile for all health and safety matters generally, will ensure that the health and safety of all officers and staff is a high priority.

D. Financial implications

Any financial implications resulting from the implementation of the policy will be contained within existing budgetary estimates.
