Appendix 1

Introduction

The report begins with a summary of performance against the “critical 12”, the major indicators the MPS is to be monitored against in the Policing Plan (Appendix 2). Appendix 3 is a report of all of the other targets and Statutory Performance Indicators (SPIs) on which the MPS is monitored.

The information compares the target with the performance during the performance year to date (PYTD) and the rolling 12 months where this is available. The rolling 12 months figure balances the PYTD data, as it is not distorted by seasonal factors. Performance against target is shown as a traffic light.

The Home Office iQuanta rankings (1 = best and 5 = worst) are now included where relevant. The MPS is compared against its Most Similar Forces (MSF) - Greater Manchester, Merseyside, West Midlands and West Yorkshire.

Performance: April – December 2007

For the sixth consecutive year, crime is falling in London, and detection rates are rising. Overall, crime for the year to date (April to Dec) is at a ten year low.

The MPS is on target for eight of the twelve critical indicators, notably on crime reduction, criminal network disruption, crime investigation and bringing offences to justice.

Confidence in local policing, according to the British Crime Survey, has risen for the third consecutive annual period and now stands at 56%, making the MPS the best performing force in its MSF group. Additionally, the Q3 survey data has been released for the Crime Victims and Public Attitudes Surveys.

While the MPS is achieving over half of the critical 12 targets set by the MPA, some remain challenging:

  • Victim satisfaction, both overall and the gap between white and BME users remains below target, according to the Q1-3 data. These targets are now unlikely to be met.
  • Gun enabled crime remains above last year’s levels – this should, however be taken in context with the long-term picture, where this year’s total is the second lowest in the last seven years.
