MPA response to the report into the concerns raised by the Lindo family and consideration of the MPS action plan

Summary

The MPS report of the Inquiry into the concerns of the Lindo family has only recently been made available to Members, following the MPS decision to publish it on their website on 29 January (subsequently withdrawn). At a joint press conference the next day, 30 January, attended by AC Michael Todd and PSPM Chair Richard Sumray, the MPA Chair responded by outlining the next steps. The PSPM committee is asked to now consider the MPA's written response to the MPS and consider its action plan for implementation of the report recommendations and progress to date.

The Inquiry was a review of the management of the circumstances giving rise to a series of events and interactions over a period of eight years between police officers based mainly in the Borough of Haringey and the Lindo family.

Mr and Mrs Lindo alleged an organised conspiracy amongst a number of Haringey police officers to harass them because of their support for a number of causes, particularly the wrongful arrest of Winston Silcott.

The Inquiry, headed by Deputy Assistant Commissioner Tarique Ghaffur, aimed to take a holistic overview of the chronology of events. The Inquiry team found no evidence of an organised conspiracy to harass Mr and Mrs Lindo by police officers either because of their connection with the Winston Silcott campaign, or for any other reason.

There was, however, evidence that harassment had taken place because of negative stereotyping of the Lindo family.

The Inquiry produced a redacted version of the report, which was briefly published on its website. The report made a number of recommendations on the 'way ahead'.

The MPA asked for an action plan to be produced by the MPS on how it intended to implement the recommendations.
