HMIC to inspect Met

Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary will carry out an inspection of the Metropolitan Police Service between 12 February and 2 March, 2001.

The focus of the inspection will be on ‘impact of policing in the MPS on the customer’.

The inspection team is expected to focus on:

• Core performance of the MPS
• Management accountability and people management
• Service delivery
• Recruitment and retention

Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority Toby Harris, said:

"We welcome the highlighting of these priority areas and would value HMIC’s views on how they envisage focusing on these."

HMIC will meet the MPA’s Chair, Toby Harris, and MPA committee Chairs in December to discuss their responsibilities for policing arrangements in the MPS.

MPA Chair’s Co-ordination and Urgency committee heard today that MPA members have been invited to accompany HMIC during the inspection. HMIC will debrief MPA members on the key findings of the inspection on 20 March 2001.

The CCU will be kept informed of any significant developments relating to the inspection.

HM Inspectors of Constabulary are appointed by the Crown on the recommendation of the Home Secretary and include senior police officers and lay members drawn from the senior management of commercial and industrial organisations.

For more than a century, HM Inspectors of Constabulary have been charged with examining and improving the efficiency of the Police Service in England and Wales.

The Metropolitan Police Authority took over responsibility for the Metropolitan Police Service from the Home Secretary on 3 July.
