Statement by Toby Harris, chair of the MPA, on the Delroy and Sonia Lindo Metropolitan Police report

42/00
11 December 2000

‘The Metropolitan Police Authority welcomes the completion of the Metropolitan Police report on the Delroy and Sonia Lindo affair, headed by DAC Tarique Ghaffur.

‘This case has been allowed to go on far too long without a satisfactory explanation or an acceptable conclusion.

‘We do not wish to pre-judge the report’s findings, which are still under consideration by both the Metropolitan Police and ourselves. But we look to the Metropolitan Police to act swiftly to reassure Londoners that lessons have been learnt and action will be taken to ensure any shortcomings in the way police deal with people from ethnic minorities are urgently addressed and rectified.

‘MPA Magistrate Member Reshard Auladin has been appointed by me to look into the report’s conclusions and advise on how best to act upon them. We will then need to report back to Londoners on the best way to take this forward for the benefit of all concerned.’
