Free travel concession for police officers welcome boost for recruitment, says MPA

The concession by all main-line train companies operating in and out of London which will allow Met officers to travel free of charge, was welcomed today by the Metropolitan Police Authority Chair, Toby Harris, as ‘a much needed boost to recruitment and retention’.

Toby Harris said:

‘The Met urgently needs more officers to patrol the London boroughs and has faced a struggle in recruiting and retaining sufficient numbers of officers.

‘By giving officers the free use of main-line trains in and out of London, this will provide a much needed boost to recruitment and retention, when seen as part of an overall package of measures to encourage more people to join or stay on.

‘This means that officers can now travel free on London buses, the Underground, Docklands Light Railway, Croydon Tramlink and main-line train services in and out of London. This offers officers much needed help with the high cost of living associated with working in the capital.’

Notes to editors

In December, Silverlink Trains became the first main-line train operator to offer free travel to Met officers.
