Winning the race - embracing diversity MET praised for improvements

HMIC's report "Winning the Race – Embracing Diversity" highlights progress and improvements across the country from which all police services can learn. However, the report emphasised that equality and the elimination of discrimination must remain the overriding aims of police services in order to gain the confidence of all the communities they serve.
The report makes special reference to progress at the Met. Some 18 months ago HMIC conducted a review of diversity issues at the Met. The results of the recommendations of that review give clear indications that the Met has moved forward since the Macpherson Report.
Commenting on the results, Toby Harris, Chair of the MPA, said:
"HMIC has found that there is strong leadership around ‘diversity’ which is now very evident in the Met and that ‘Protect and ‘Respect’, the Met’s diversity policy is ’strong on both its strategic perspective and operational content’.
"In particular the work of the Community Safety Units was singled out as ‘totally committed, energetic and focused in their work’. This is extremely important as this is the front line contact communities have with officers when reporting hate crimes.
"Significantly, the research by the Met concerning stop and search, in particular disproportionality, is acknowledged as pertinent both on a London and national level.
"Other progress made, for example in Community and Race Relations Training and innovative initiatives concerning recruitment, retention and progression both centrally and in Boroughs are also highlighted.
"The MPA itself is noted for the introduction of it Consultation Diversity and Outreach Committee as ‘a clear example of increased accountability and impetus in the MPS consultative processes’.
"Overall this is clear evidence that the Met has taken on board the recommendations made in the Macpherson Report and is moving in the right direction. We will continue to work hard to ensure that we gain the trust and confidence of all the communities in London."
