Met maintains recruitment interest

Latest figures show that applications to join the Met remain at a high level. At the Full Authority meeting held on 10 May, the Commissioner confirmed that during this financial year there are plans for ten intakes of recruits to the Met for training and advertising campaigns are in the pipeline to boost interest.

Toby Harris, chair of the MPA said:

“These figures are extremely encouraging. Although applications rose to an unprecedented high in January of this year, a good level of interest has been maintained. In April approximately 3420 applications forms were dispatched, with 1114 of those forms being returned completed.

“An advertising campaign is planned for later this month to encourage further public response, followed by a national recruitment campaign in the Summer. In order to free up operational police officers from desk jobs back onto street duties, we are also planning a major campaign for general administrative posts, Experience shows that effective advertising does have a positive result on the number of enquiries we receive.

“However if our police service is to be a true representation of the communities it serves, we still have a lot of work to do recruiting members of visible ethnic minorities. In order to meet recruitment figures set by the Home Office and to encourage Londoners from all communities to join the Met, we will continue to work together with the Met to build trust and confidence in our police amongst visible ethnic minority communities.“
