Consultation, Diversity and Outreach Committee to visit Havering

40/01
21 June 2001

Stop and Search is at the top of the agenda for the Consultation Diversity and Outreach Committee when it meets in the Borough of Havering on 26 June 2001. The venue is St Edward's Comprehensive School, London Road, Romford at 6.00pm.

Over the past three months the MPA has conducted a consultation programme on Recommendation 61 of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry Report which recommends the recording of all 'stops', as well as 'stops and searches'. This was part of a national programme of consultation requested by the Home Office to all Police Authorities, and the Committee will now consider the MPA's interim response to the Association of Police Authorities. In London many diverse sections of the community were consulted, from the Irish Community, youth groups, the police themselves, through to children from the age of five to 16 years. Additionally, the MPA is running a Stop and Search information campaign, as detailed in Recommendation 63 of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry Report. The 'Know your Rights' campaign will be launched officially on 13 July, but information material has already been sent out to numerous communities, youth groups and schools throughout London.

Other subjects on the agenda include a report on Independent Custody Visiting, Race Hate Crimes progress report and facilitating pan London Community and Police Consultative Groups. The Committee will also look at current Met youth offending initiatives and working with young people, proposed pilots to test new consultation arrangements and plans for Community and Race Relations Training.

A member of the NSPCC will a give a guest presentation – Building Safer Communities for Children – a cause for concern for all our communities and one that people from all walks of life can sign up to.

There will also be a period at the beginning of the meeting when members of the public can put questions to the Committee about policing in their Borough.
