Metropolitan Police Authority view controversial deaths in custody film

50/01
21 July 2001

The Metropolitan Police Authority today facilitated the viewing of the film Injustice, which examines deaths in custody, for the Authority's members and other interested parties to inform the debate on this highly emotive issue.

The MPA took no part in the making or production of the film, which was screened by permission of the producers to an invited audience, including representatives of the Metropolitan Police Authority, Metropolitan Police, Police Complaints Authority, the Association of Police Authorities, other interested groups and relatives of those people featured in the film.

Richard Sumray, chair of the MPA's professional standards and performance monitoring committee, said:

"We felt it was important for MPA members and others to view this film, which has aroused so much feeling among interested parties, supporters and critics.

"We wanted to be aware of the issues raised by the film and the views of relatives of people featured in it, as well as the other interested parties viewing it with us.

"Whatever the circumstances of individual cases, a death in custody is always tragic and regrettable. The MPA will continue to take an active interest in this area of major public and police concern to see what lessons can be learnt, and to make sure they are followed."
