MPA calls for greater partnerships to tackle crime and disorder in boroughs

74/01
18 October 2001

Working together in partnership to tackle crime and the fear of crime in every London borough is being given top priority by Toby Harris, Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority.

Speaking in Richmond Upon Thames at the first of a series of visits to include every London borough over the next 12 months, he said:

"The purpose of these meetings is to identify crime hotspots and areas of serious public concern in each borough that can be tackled together in partnership.

"By going from borough to borough we will be able to spread good ideas across London in a direct and informal way.

"Police cannot solve every crime and disorder problem alone. Tackling such difficult and complex issues, such a street robberies, burglary, vandalism and graffiti, can be only truly effective if the effort is shared.

"By discussing these issues with all borough stakeholders, from the police and local authority, to community, youth and hard to reach groups, we can make a real difference to the quality of people's lives.

"Over the next year I will visit each and every London borough, and will follow up with a further meeting to each one to assess progress and highlight outstanding issues."
