Metropolitan Police Authority welcomes government decision extending Golden Jubilee Medal to the police

91/01
4 December 2001

Members of the Metropolitan Police Authority were today delighted by the Government's decision to extend the award of the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal to members of the police service and other front line emergency services.

Toby Harris, Chair of the MPA, said:

"I am delighted the Government has now decided to recognise the invaluable work and dedication of the police, along with the other emergency services, by extending the original and limited distribution of Her Majesty's Golden Jubilee Medal.

"The police face enormous, frequently dangerous, challenges on the streets every working day. This is why we made strong representations to the Government to reconsider their original decision.

"Today's announcement signals national gratitude to many deserving officers. I know the Met will welcome this recognition of their selfless courage and dedication to duty."

Notes to editors

Toby Harris wrote to the Home Secretary in October calling upon the Government to recognise the valuable work and devotion of all police officers, pointing out that the Queen's Silver jubilee Medal was awarded to the police in 1977.
