MPA welcomes Met moves to retain and encourage minority ethnic staff

26/02
14 March 2002

The Metropolitan Police Authority’s diversity committee today commended the Metropolitan Police for strengthening its commitment to retain and promote minority ethnic staff.

The MPA’s Coordination, Diversity and Outreach Committee was told that the Met’s Diversity Directorate had taken over responsibility for the retention and progression of Met staff from minority ethnic and all under-represented groups.

R David Muir, CDO Chair, said:

“It is vital that the proportion of minority ethnic officers and staff within the Met is substantially increased in line with Home Office targets to properly reflect the wider community.

“After joining the Met, people from minority ethnic communities must be treated with respect, fairness and equality so that they choose to stay on and pursue a career.”

Retention and progression will now complement the broader diversity programme being pursued by the Met, providing a more comprehensive approach. A new team within the directorate will focus on matters of race, gender, disability, faith and sexual orientation.
