“Superb new facilities will enhance Camden borough police performance” – refurbished Holborn police station

64/02
17 June 2002

“The superb new facilities at Holborn Police Station will enhance the performance of Camden borough police when carrying out their duties” said Toby Harris, Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority, today at the official opening of the newly refurbished station.

Unveiling a commemorative plaque together with Sir John Stevens, the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Toby Harris continued:

“The new facilities provided here at Holborn are exemplary and provide a model of excellence for future refurbishments throughout the MPA estate. The focus of the refurbishment has been to provide amenities that not only enhance the working environment for staff but also serve to improve security, accessibility and provide safe surroundings for all those who use the building.

“The MPA is keen to modernise its estate to provide up-to-date, effective and efficient working environments that will enable police officers and civilian staff to carry out their duties more proficiently. A refurbishment project like this is the ideal opportunity to rationalise and improve facilities and I congratulate all those involved in making this scheme such a success.”

Holborn Police Station, which re-opened as Camden Borough Headquarters on 15 April 2002, is one of the largest operational police stations in London housing over 400 personnel and has been refitted with all the latest MPS specification fittings and state-of-the-art facilities.

The modern Custody Suite comprises 14 cells and two detention rooms, benefits from a comprehensive CCTV system and includes two cells available for the detention of vulnerable persons with cameras inside the cells to monitor safety.

There will also be ‘restricted access’ Video Interview Rooms, both within the main Custody Suite for general use and also on the third floor for the specific use of the Child Protection Team, the Sexual Offences Unit and the Community Safety Unit.

Notes to editors

1. Holborn Police Station comprises a three-story podium block and ten story tower block. The refurbishment project commenced in May 2000 at a cost of £8.2 million and was completed ahead of schedule by a partnership of contractors. The project team focused on communicating MPS requirements to the contractors via extensive workshops to ensure satisfactory results.

2. Other significant improvements to the building have been enacted, such as the provision of a lift for disabled users and a remodelled entrance on Lambs Conduit Street (formerly on Theobalds Road) which allowed for an increase in the number of cells from 7 to 14 and the improvement of the charge area. Staff locker room facilities have also been substantially improved.
