MPA calls for urgent report into fatal collision involving woman and police car

69/02
24 June 2002

The Metropolitan Police Authority has called upon the Met for a “full and urgent report” into the fatal collision between a 29-year-old woman and a police car outside Shooters Hill police station in the early hours of this morning (Monday).

Toby Harris, Chair of the Authority, said:

“This is an extremely upsetting and regrettable incident which has resulted in the tragic and untimely death of a young woman. I would like to extend my condolences to her family and friends. We also sympathise with the two police constables concerned who have been traumatised by this awful event.

“This latest incident adds to the Authority’s concern about collisions involving police vehicles which result in death or injury. I have therefore asked Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir John Stevens for a full and urgent report into the circumstances surrounding this case and what is being done to reduce the number of collisions involving police drivers.

“Obviously, police need to respond quickly to emergencies and other incidents and driving to a scene is often the best option. But in responding, we cannot endanger people’s safety, neither the police officers nor the public. Every case is different, but if there are common factors, we must do what needs to be done to avoid any further such tragedies.”
