New taskforce looks at ways to boost Met's minority ethnic recruits

81/02
25 July 2002

The Metropolitan Police Authority has set up a new taskforce to examine ways of increasing visible minority ethnic recruitment to the Metropolitan Police Service.

David Muir, Deputy Chair of the Authority, has been appointed to lead the taskforce which will work with the Met’s own recruitment team and other partners.

He said:

“The Met is recruiting record numbers of officers but there are still too few people coming forward from visible minority ethnic communities.

“We need to boost numbers substantially so that the service reflects the proportionality of the population it polices.

“The taskforce will work with the Met’s own recruitment team, the Commission for Racial Equality, boroughs and other partners to find new ways of attracting visible minority ethnic recruits. The emphasis will be on imaginative local initiatives that provide not only ideas but solutions.”

Four other members of the Authority were appointed to the taskforce: Abdal Ullah, Cindy Butts, Peter Herbert and Jennette Arnold. Senior members of the Met’s Diversity and Human Resources directorates will also join the taskforce.
