Metropolitan Police Authority Full Authority Meeting
96/02
24 September 2002
The Metropolitan Police Authority will meet on Thursday 26 September at 10.00a.m. in Meeting Room 1 (ground floor), 10 Dean Farrar Street, SW1. The meeting is open to members of the public and press.
This month the MPA will be considering the Met's new Drug Strategy 2003-2006 in preparation for its introduction early next year and the Met's Environmental Strategy will be launched by Toby Harris, Chair of the MPA, and the Commissioner, Sir John Stevens, during the meeting.
Toby Harris, Chair of the MPA, will announce a second programme of borough visits to take place during 2002/2003 following the successful first tour last year. The meetings were attended in
each
borough by the leader of the Council or relevant portfolio Cabinet Member, the Borough Commander and key partnership organisations. The purpose of these visits was to discuss pertinent issues about
policing in the borough and common threads emerged through nearly all
the meetings. These included partnership working, anti-crime initiatives, fear of crime, warden schemes, Neighbourhood Watch, schools and youth involvement and anti-social behaviour.
Toby Harris said:
"This programme of visits was a rewarding experience and helped me to appreciate the challenges facing borough police, councils and other agencies, and the need for strong and coherent partnership working. I look forward to my next visits and an even greater participation from all agencies involved in borough policing."
Members will review this year's Notting Hill Carnival which overall was a successful event with no major incidents or significant crime issues. Although arrests were up by 50% on last year to 158, this was due to intelligence led policing tactics and a clear and widely understood arrest policy. Factors such as the new route, partnership working, officers designated specifically to the bands and intelligence led policing all combined to make Carnival safer for everyone. A review by all the agencies involved is currently underway so that good practice can be incorporated in next year's Carnival.
Other items to be considered include a progress report on the implementation of the Virdi Inquiry action plan and the evaluation of the Lambeth Cannabis Warning Pilot Scheme.
The Commissioner, Sir John Stevens, will give an oral update on current operational policing issues in London and Toby Harris, Chair of the MPA, Catherine Crawford, Clerk to the MPA and Members
will
give updates on Authority matters.
A petition will be presented to the Authority and Members will be requested, in accordance with the Authority's Standing Orders, to hear a question from a member of the public.
