MPA continues to build borough partnerships to reduce crime and disorder
102/02
11 October 2002
Toby Harris, Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority, today began a second tour of London’s boroughs to emphasise the essential role partnership work must play in tackling crime and disorder across the capital.
Speaking in Bromley to an audience of key local stakeholders, ranging from police and local authority representatives to community, youth and hard to reach groups, Toby said:
“I learned a great deal about the variety and depth of crimes across the capital and how they blight local communities during my first round of visits. From densely built urban areas to the greener suburbs, fear of crime and the visible scars of anti-social behaviour mar people’s everyday lives.
“The police cannot be expected to solve all crime and anti-social behaviour problems by themselves. These are often complex social issues and need to be tackled in co-ordination with key stakeholders and with reference to local community representatives.
“This new round of meetings will check on progress and highlight outstanding issues since our last discussions and, I hope, involve more stakeholders who want to take a strategic role in making their community a safe environment.”
In conclusion, Toby said:
“Our local communities expect action and have a right to feel safe. What the MPA wants to achieve are real, working partnerships that can identify problems at an early stage and address them from a multi-agency approach.”
