MPA hosts the Independent Custody Visitor Association Annual Conference 2002

Logo of the ICVAThe Metropolitan Police Authority is hosting the 2002 ICVA Annual Conference at Central Hall Westminster, London SW1H 9NH, on Saturday 2 November 2002.

The one-day conference provides delegates from custody visitor schemes across the country with the opportunity to hear keynote speakers and explore relevant topics. Highlights of the conference will include:

  • 10:20am keynote address by Toby Harris, Chair of the MPA;
  • 10:30am ‘Current Issues in Police Reform’ by Nicholas Long, Independent Member of the MPA;
  • 11:00am  Special presentation to a long serving custody visitor, Greta Brooks, who made the first visits in Brixton in 1984 following the Scarman Report;
  • 14:15pm ‘Codes of Practice and National Standards’ by John Woodcock, Home Office.

Members of the press are welcome to attend the conference which begins at 10:15am.

Notes to editors

1. The Metropolitan Police Authority is hosting the ICVA Annual Conference 2002 in recognition of Section 51 of the Police reform Act which places independent custody visiting on a statutory basis from April 2003.

2. Independent Custody Visitors play an important role in maintaining public confidence in police custody arrangements, offering effective scrutiny by independent and impartial people. They are members of the public who volunteer to ensure that the welfare of those detained in police custody is maintained.
