Metropolitan Police Authority full Authority meeting

121/02
27 November 2002

The Metropolitan Police Authority will meet on Thursday 28 November at 10.00am in Meeting Room 1 (ground floor), 10 Dean Farrar Street, SW1. The meeting is open to members of the public and press.

Following the launch of the National Policing Plan at the Association of Police Authorities Conference, Members will be updated on the conference and this will be followed by a discussion about the MPA Policing Plan objectives for 2003/2004. Toby Harris, Chair of the MPA, said in response to the National Policing Plan:

"The MPA, working with the MPS, will develop a strategy which takes forward the Home Secretary's plans for policing generally while, crucially, addressing the unique needs of the capital and our many diverse communities.

"The Authority will ensure that local priorities in every borough will reflect the genuine concerns of the local community and enable us to make a reality out of policing by consent. We are reassured by the small print of the plan which makes it clear that national priorities will not be allowed to override these local concerns and wishes."

The Road Safety Activity report outlines the Traffic Occupational Command Unit's strategy to make London's roads safer for everyone, with the prime objective to reduce casualties in line with government targets. Borough Commanders are responsible for the strategic management of road safety in their borough and some excellent initiatives have emerged from high profile activities in Havering and Merton. In addition to borough schemes, the Met's Traffic OCU is also taking part in the Department of Transport's national 'Think' road safety campaign.

The Commissioner Sir John Stevens will give an update on operational policing issues in London and Toby Harris, Chair of the MPA, Catherine Crawford, Clerk to the MPA and Members will give updates on Authority matters.

Notes to editors

The Metropolitan Police Authority took over the responsibility for the Metropolitan Police Service on 3 July 2000. Its duties include securing an effective and efficient police service for the Metropolitan Police District and securing Best Value - ensuring continuous improvement of London's policing services; consulting the people of London to find out their views about policing in the capital and taking account of these views when setting objectives.
