Operational note: Hackney launch of Recommendation 61 – recording all police stops

22/03
26 March 2003

From Tuesday 1 April 2003 all ‘Police Stops’ in the borough of Hackney will be recorded by police officers and a record of the stop given to the individual. This is a direct recommendation of the independent Stephen Lawrence Inquiry Report.

Recommendation 61 will be launched on Monday 31 March 2003, at 10.30am at Ocean 2, Mare Street, Hackney. Toby Harris, Chair of the MPA, Commander Bob Broadhurst, Metropolitan Police Service, and a member of the London Borough of Hackney will lead the event and answer public and media questions.

Notes to editors

1. Hackney is one of seven initial areas chosen by the government for phased implementation of Recommendation 61 across the whole of England and Wales. Evaluation of the initial area results will help identify the best means and practice for national implementation.
