MPA pays tribute to ‘steely and determined’ Deputy Commissioner, knighted in birthday honours

43/03
14 June 2003

Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Sir Ian Blair, knighted in the Queen’s birthday honours, is a ‘consummate professional policeman’ who has been at the forefront of driving forward police modernisation and reform, said Toby Harris, Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority.

“This honour is thoroughly deserved and is in recognition of the dedicated service Sir Ian has given throughout his career to the police and the communities they serve,” Toby Harris said.

“Since becoming Deputy Commissioner, he has overseen major reforms in the police and the wider criminal justice system with a steely resolve and steadfast professionalism.

“One of the most fundamental changes has been the establishment of the MPA, making the Met publicly accountable for the first time. Sir Ian has worked tirelessly with us to raise standards and increase effectiveness throughout the service, and oversee rapid growth in police numbers.

“The Diversity Directorate falls within his command and he has ensured that the Met continues to make policing more accessible and transparent for all London’s communities.

“He also worked with the Authority to supervise some of the most far reaching reforms in policing during the introduction of the Police Reform Act.

“Although widely recognised as a moderniser, he displays the traditional standards of duty and commitment that are intrinsic to successful and effective policing.

“On behalf of all the Members of the Authority, I wish to warmly congratulate Sir Ian for this highly deserved public recognition of his dedication to policing.”
