Metropolitan Police commend for a successful Notting Hill Carnival 2003

60/03
26 August 2003

Notting Hill Carnival 2003 concluded without major incident. 9,715 police officers were deployed to ensure public safety and deter any potential criminal activity.

Speaking after the 2003 carnival, Toby Harris, Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority, said:

“Once again Carnival has passed off without major incident and the enjoyment of over half a million people has been assured by a successful policing operation to deter the minority of criminals who could have spoiled the experience for the majority.

“Overall, there has been an increase in the number of arrests made this year, a majority for drugs related offences. The Met has been robust in its proactive campaign to target criminality, both before and during the event.

“I take this opportunity to congratulate the Met for a superb operation and the dedicated hard work of police officers and support staff alike over the two days of Carnival.”
