Metropolitan Police Authority - January meeting

The Metropolitan Police Authority will meet on Thursday 29 January, 10.00am at 10 Dean Farrar Street, London SW1. The meeting (Part 1) is open to members of the public and press.

The Authority will be discussing its response to the green paper on police reform ‘Building Safer Communities Together’. The government paper was published in November 2003, outlining options and seeking views on further steps in police reform.

Toby Harris, Chair of the MPA, said:

“When the green paper was published, we welcomed government proposals to make police more accountable to local communities.

“The MPA has already done a great deal to increase accessibility and transparency to our police service. This is the bedrock for building safer communities and enabling our officers to police with the co-operation of the communities they serve.

“We embraced this opportunity for further consultation with our diverse communities on the direction reform should take, and to respond specifically to the government proposals.

“The fundamental principle that guides our work is that the capital must have good quality, good value, responsive and sensitive policing.”

The MPA consulted with 500 community groups and responses from these groups, Community Police Consultative Groups and Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships will be summarised in a further report. The key areas for reform highlighted by the government include community engagement, accountability, operational effectiveness and service modernisation.

Other topics to be discussed include:

• Policing and Performance Plan 2004/5;
• review of the independent evaluation of the MPS community and race relations training;
• equalities performance of community and police consultative groups;
• appointments; and
• members expenses.

The Acting Commissioner Sir Ian Blair will give an update on operational policing issues in London and Toby Harris, Chair of the MPA, Catherine Crawford, Clerk to the MPA and Members will give updates on Authority matters.
