MPA welcomes Assistant Commissioner Ghaffur's report on race and diversity in the MPS

17/04
10 March 2004

Toby Harris, Chair of the MPA, said in response to Assistant Commissioner Tarique Ghaffur's internal report:

"We find it an encouraging advance that the MPS is prepared to be as thorough in their research and as open in their results as this report demonstrates.

"We will continue to support the MPS to progress this work, which takes forward many issues raised by the Authority.

"For example low representation of ethnic minority officers in Specialist Operations and the need to address recruitment and training at Hendon have been 'work in progress' for the Authority for some time now.

"The Morris Inquiry, which the Authority set up in January, is already addressing other problem areas that have been flushed out by the report, such as how internal complaints by ethnic minority officers are handled and disproportionality in discipline, and these issues will continue to be central to the Inquiry.

"In order to build up the trust of all Londoners in their police service it is crucial that we continue to work together with the MPS to confront these difficult subjects in a transparent and honest manner."
