Metropolitan Police Authority - April meeting

32/04
26 April 2004

A meeting of the Metropolitan Police Authority will be held in Meeting Room 1 (ground floor), 10 Dean Farrar Street, London SW1 on Thursday 29 April 2004 at 10.00am.

This month members will be discussing Assistant Commissioner Tarique Ghaffur's thematic review of race and diversity in the Metropolitan Police Service. This item was deferred from the authority’s March meeting. The report, which has been welcomed by the MPA, was commissioned by Sir John Stevens in the wake of the BBC documentary ‘The Secret Policeman'.

Toby Harris, Chair of the MPA, said:

"We find it an encouraging advance that the MPS is prepared to be as thorough in their research and as open in their results as this report demonstrates.

"We will continue to support the MPS as it progresses this work, which takes forward many issues raised by the Authority.

"The Morris Inquiry, which the Authority set up in January 2004, is already addressing problem areas that have been flushed out by the report. For example, the handling of internal complaints by ethnic minority officers and disproportionality in internal disciplinary cases. Issues like these are central to the Inquiry.

"In order to maintain the trust of all Londoners in their police service it is crucial that we continue to work together with the MPS to confront these difficult subjects in a transparent and honest manner."

A report on the proposals for taking forward the review’s recommendations will also be available at the meeting.

As part of the MPA’s remit to secure continuous improvement in the way policing is provided in London, members will also be examining the MPS end of year 2003/2004 performance figures.

Other items on the agenda include:

  • MPA partnership visits 2003/4
  • C3i/Airwave position report
  • Update report from the Standards Committee

The Commissioner Sir John Stevens will give an update on operational policing issues in London and Toby Harris, Chair of the MPA, Catherine Crawford, Clerk to the MPA and Members will give updates on Authority matters.
