MPA welcomes new Disability Independent Advisory Group for the MPS

The Metropolitan Police Authority welcomes the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) initiative to recruit a Disability Independent Advisory Group.

The new Disability Independent Advisory Group (IAG) will help London’s police improve the service they offer to disabled people in the capital and will advise on how to ensure disability-aware policing that provides services to meet the needs of disabled people from all parts of the community.

Kirsten Hearn, Chair of the MPA Equal Opportunities & Diversity Board, which leads on all issues relating to equal opportunities and diversity within the Authority and the MPS, said:

“I welcome the establishment of the new Disability Independent Advisory Group and look forward to working with its members on improving services for disabled Londoners.

“As a blind woman, I know how frustrating it can be to get accessible services from organisations such as the MPS and to make them change their discriminatory practices. This new advisory group will enable the MPS to develop the services they offer to disabled people, enabling London’s police to offer real, timely and appropriate support.

“I would urge as many disabled people as possible to actively consider applying to join the group and work with the police to make a real difference to the service they offer to all Londoners.”
