MPA response to new government proposals for police reform

Commenting on the Home Office consultation paper "Policing: Modernising Police Powers To Meet Community Needs", published today, Len Duvall, Chair of the MPA said:
“We welcome the continuing debate, and wholeheartedly agree with the intention to further strengthen the link between the police and the community, increasing the accountability and responsiveness of the service, and building the confidence and awareness of the community.
“The Met now has a record number of Police Officers, over 30,301, who together with over 1,788 Police Community Support Officers, and with the strategic support of 12,575 police staff, all contribute to making the streets of London safer for everyone.
“We will want to be satisfied that any new powers introduced are both appropriate and workable, and will make a significant contribution to creating a more efficient, transparent and accountable service.”
