MPA totally rebuts Metropolitan Police Federation comments on Sylvester Inquest judicial review funding

88/04
26 November 2004

David Riddle, Solicitor to the Metropolitan Police Authority, totally rebutted the Metropolitan Police Federation’s condemnation of the MPA for funding the legal costs for both the officers and the Sylvester family for the judicial review as being determined by political expediency.

He said:

“Comments made by police officers and supported by the Metropolitan Police Federation, criticising the MPA for funding the family as well as them, are wholly misconceived.

“Throughout this case the MPA has paid careful attention to its responsibilities to the officers and its wider legal duties to promote racial equality, and in this case to ensure both parties were able to put arguments to the courts.

“The MPA approached its responsibilities in an entirely reasonable manner and acted on the advice of a leading QC.”
