Metropolitan Police Authority – January meeting

04/05
25 January 2005

The Metropolitan Police Authority will meet in Room 1 (ground floor), 10 Dean Farrar Street, London SW1 on Thursday 27 January 2005 at 10.00am.

This will be the last Authority meeting that Sir John Stevens will attend as Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police.

Congratulating Sir John on his time in office Len Duvall, Chair of the MPA, said:

“Sir John Stevens has overseen the most fundamental change of recent years in the Metropolitan Police – the establishment of the MPA. This has made the MPS publicly accountable for the first time and we have worked together to raise standards, increase effectiveness and oversee rapid growth in police numbers.

“He took over at a very difficult time for the MPS and through his outstanding leadership he has helped to build a service fit for the 21st century.”

Members will receive a report on ‘Operation Bracknell’, the UK policing response to the Asian Tsunami disaster. Aneeta Prem, magistrate member, who has visited Phuket with MPS officers, will update the Authority on the operation in SE Asia.

As an MPA member, her role was to advise the executive group managing the MPS response. This enabled MPA scrutiny of the significant use of MPS resources whilst assisting transparency and community confidence. Although ‘Operation Bracknell’ was originally led and co-ordinated by the MPS, from January 17 it has taken on a national structure. It will probably be the largest major enquiry ever undertaken on a national basis.

Other issues on the agenda include:

  • Policing Plan 2005/6;
  • disabled people and the police – a new relationship?;
  • police reform white paper – proposed MPA response;
  • Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership update; and
  • Audit Commission Initial Performance Assessment of the MPA.

Commissioner Sir John Stevens will give an oral update on operational policing issues in London and present a written performance report.

Members will also hear a question from Councillor Pat Ryans, of Croydon Council, and Kathryn Bonds, representing the Upper Norwood Community Resource Centre. Clerk to the Authority, Catherine Crawford, will give the Authority’s response at the meeting.
