Metropolitan Police Authority - May meeting

24/05
23 May 2005

A meeting of the Metropolitan Police Authority will be held in Meeting Room 1 (ground floor), 10 Dean Farrar Street, London, SW1 on Thursday 26 May 2005 at 10.00 a.m.

The Authority will consider a report updating members about the use of MPS cells by the Home Office for immigration detainees.

Cindy Butts, Deputy Chair of the MPA, and lead on this issue said:

"There are several factors which have all contributed to reducing the number of detainees held in MPS custody - in January and February 2005 a total of 755 persons were removed which is a decrease of 352 prisoners for the same period in 2004.

" Added to this, changes in immigration service practices will help speed up the transfer of detainees from MPS custody suites to immigration service facilities. This will also reduce the average time spent in police cells by detainees.

"The MPA will continue to work with the new MPS Custody Directorate to ensure that this progress is maintained and that all arrangements reflect the particular circumstances, such as community impact, that relate specifically to London."

Other items on the agenda include:

  • MPS road safety activity;
  • Operation Blunt - knife crime initiative;
  • Responding to the Report of the Morris Inquiry;
  • Provision of vehicle fuel charge facilities and
  • Review of members' allowances.

Members will also hear questions from Councillor Bernard Gentry of Lambeth Council concerning the status of Borough Crime and Disorder Partnerships, from Paul Webbewood concerning political affiliation of independent and magistrate members of the Authority and Lynne Featherstone MP, Councillor Neil Williams of Haringey, Councillors Fiona Dunlop and Heather Johnson of Islington and Heather Burke, concerning the policing of cross-boundary neighbourhoods. Catherine Crawford, Chief Executive to the Authority, will respond at the meeting.

Commissioner Sir Ian Blair will give an oral update on operational issues in London and present a written performance report.
