MPA draft budget agreed

57/05
17 November 2005

The Metropolitan Police Authority today agreed its draft 2006/07 budget for submission to the Mayor.

Len Duvall, chair of the MPA, said:

“This is only the start of a very difficult budget round and there are still a number of unknowns to be resolved before the final budget is set in February. This includes the provisional central government grant settlement, support for counter terrorism from the Home Office and Safer Neighbourhood funding from the London Mayor.

“The Authority hopes that the Mayor’s budget and increased flexibility in government grant will enable us to roll out a further 368 Safer Neighbourhood teams. This will mean that every neighbourhood in London would have its own dedicated, community-based team by April 2007. Evidence so far has confirmed our belief that this re-engagement of the police at a local level with London’s communities has reduced crime and, just as importantly, the fear of crime.

“The draft MPA budget will also result in efficiencies and other savings of £67million, making a cumulative total over the past five years of £307 million. All of these savings have been ploughed back into policing.

“During 2005/06 the MPA, working in partnership with the MPS, has overseen a full Service Review to identify further efficiencies that will be redirected into policing priorities and supporting frontline police services. The MPA will ensure that all extra resources achieved through this review will be used to build on our successes and effective financial management will remain a priority for the Authority.”
