Metropolitan Police Authority – statement in response to written request from Rt Hon David Davis MP

35/06
20 June 2006

Len Duvall, Chair of the MPA, has written in response to a letter form the Rt Hon David Davis MP calling for MPA intervention in the Independent Police Complaints Commission’s inquiry into the Stockwell shooting following newspaper speculation of a delay in completing the report.

Len Duvall has replied:

“I am surprised that someone who has been involved in politics as long as you have should believe everything you read in the newspapers. In fact the article in question went on to make it clear that the IPCC have confirmed their investigations are not, and have not been, held up by the timing of any outstanding interviews.

“The investigation is complex and must be thorough. I understand that waiting for the outcome is stressful both for the family and friends of Mr de Menezes and for the officers involved. However, I am confident that the availability of Sir Ian and his senior colleagues, all of whom are co-operating fully with the IPCC, is not holding up progress.”

Notes to editors

1. The Shadow Home Secretary’s letter to the MPA Chair was in response to incorrect weekend media speculation that the IPCC Stockwell report was delayed because senior Metropolitan Police Service officers were not available for interview until July or August.
