MPA consulting with deaf and hearing impaired Londoners to improve services

Deaf and hearing impaired Londoners will help the Metropolitan Police Authority formulate its Disability Equality Scheme (DES) to ensure London’s disabled communities receive accessible and fair police services.
A user involvement and consultation event on Wednesday 12 July will focus on the development of the Authority’s DES. Attendees will be asked to consider issues that need to be included to both improve the quality of life for disabled Londoners and strengthen the relationship between disabled communities and the Metropolitan Police Service. The day will also provide opportunities for Londoners to indicate how they would like to be further involved in the development of the Authority’s DES.
Kirsten Hearn, MPA member and chair of the Authority’s Disability Oversight Group, said:
“The MPA recognises that disabled Londoners have specific needs and concerns and is working to improve the quality of life for disabled people in the capital and the services provided by the Metropolitan Police Service.
“An integral way in which we will achieve this is through the development of our Disability Equality Scheme (DES) which will encourage the organisation to improve strategically and to actively challenge disablism within our internal and external operations.
“Organisations have been invited to assist us as part of our Disability Oversight Group to oversee the development of the Scheme, and in addition we plan to go out and gain a range of views of disabled people both from within our organisation and from the public living in London.
“The MPA is committed to respecting equality, diversity and human rights in everything we do and working to ensure the police share these values.”
