MPA - promoting peace and community safety with London Week of Peace

55/06
12 September 2006

The Metropolitan Police Authority is again supporting London Week of Peace, the annual festival (10 – 17 September) for Londoners to celebrate and promote initiatives that positively impact on peace and community safety.

Cindy Butts, deputy chair of the MPA, said:

“The Metropolitan Police Authority believes London Week of Peace is a valuable way for local communities to get together and become involved in the fight against criminality and violence.

“London Week of Peace celebrates diversity, and promotes justice, equality and respect by hosting activities in every London borough. These are all values that the police authority believes in and wants to promote more effectively within local communities across London.

“By making their collective voice heard we can see that the overwhelming majority of people are prepared to stand together and collectively say ‘enough is enough – we want our streets to be safe for everyone and free from the fear of crime’.

“Young and old will unite in many different ways - sports events, peace walks, public rallies, street festivals or concerts - to show their support for safer communities. London’s local police, through the Safer Neighbourhoods teams, are joining with their communities at these events in almost every borough.”

Cindy concluded:

“More than ever in these difficult times, facing the threat of terrorist attacks on an unprecedented scale – acts of mass murder and the most indiscriminate of crimes affecting the safety of everyone in the capital – we need to pull together and promote our shared beliefs in strong communities built on equality and trust.”
