The Metropolitan Police Authority today appointed Commander Stuart Osborne to the new role of Deputy Assistant Commissioner Senior National Coordinator, Counter-Terrorism, in the Metropolitan Police Service.

In this new role Commander Osborne, currently Deputy National Coordinator of Terrorist Investigations, will develop oversight over the newly established Police National CT Network and will be responsible for leading the operational and professional development of the CT network. This role is in addition to and complements the role of the existing Senior National Co-ordinator, Counter Terrorism.

Commander Osborne was interviewed by a panel of three MPA members, Vice Chair Kit Malthouse, Reshard Auladin and Toby Harris. Catherine Crawford, MPA Chief Executive, was also in attendance.

Kit Malthouse, who led the interview panel, said:

“This is a high profile, challenging role and we were seeking an individual with significant experience and a real commitment to developing the national response to counter terrorism.

“We were impressed by Commander Osborne’s display of operational experience and have confidence he will bring strong leadership skills to this pivotal position.”

Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson said:

"I am delighted at the appointment of Stuart Osborne as Senior National Co-ordinator, Counter Terrorism (Deputy Assistant Commissioner).

“During his 27 years as a police officer he has established an excellent track record in operational leadership and working in partnership with national agencies, government and the security services.

“He has a genuine commitment to identifying and preventing terrorist activity, extremist behaviour and subversive activities.

“He will bring his wealth of experience to bear in what is a crucial and hugely challenging role."
