MPA briefing paper 75/2011
This briefing paper has been prepared to inform members and staff. It is not a committee report and no decisions are required.
Summary
At the Strategic and Operational Policing Committee meeting of 13 October 2011, Members requested for the MPS to provide responses to two questions raised in relation to the use of traffic cameras.
Question 1: The number of traffic cameras that are fully functional across the MPS?
Response 1: Transport for London is responsible for the procurement and maintenance of speed and red light safety cameras. There are currently 466 housings for old-style wet film speed cameras and 301 housings for old-style red light cameras. (Live camera equipment is rotated between the housings and it follows that at any one time a number of the housings are empty, operating in “dummy flashing mode” as a deterrent.) In addition, there are 186 of the newer digital cameras.
We have been informed by TfL that the current overall availability of wet film and digital cameras is 93 per cent. The remaining 7 per cent of cameras are not working at present and will be repaired. At any one time there is a small proportion of cameras awaiting or undergoing repair. Otherwise, all sites where the cameras are in working order are potentially operational.
Question 2: The number of Cameras switched off (listed by Borough)?
Response 2: The information relating to this question is held by Transport for London. TfL have advised that they do not have a safety camera site decommissioning policy. Camera sites which are removed for road works etc are reinstated and returned to full working condition. TfL maintain sites to an operational standard but there are always a small number of sites unavailable through maintenance or repair.
