Mayor's questions

Following the election of the new Mayor of London on the 1 May 2008 the procedure for sending Mayor's questions about policing to the Authority has come to an end. The Mayor will now answer all questions submitted to him.

On 5 December 2007 the Mayor of London wrote to Sally Hamwee, chair of the Assembly, to advise that he would be referring Assembly Members questions that relate to the actions and functions of the Metropolitan Police Service and the London Fire Brigade to the relevant functional body for response.

Where the Mayor decides that he is not going to answer policing or crime related questions the Assembly Member would be asked to direct their question to MPA

The MPA will send answers to these questions direct to the Assembly Member via email. We aim to publish the questions and answers on the website five days after providing answers to the Assembly Member.

Assembly members' questions to the Mayor of London

Cycling duties

Date: March 2008

Assembly Member: Jenny Jones

Question

How many police officers have been trained for cycle duties in each year since 2000?

Answer

To identify all BOCU officers trained since 2000 would involve a large amount of work and would be at disproportional cost to the MPS. CO15 have supplied a list of numbers of officers that have completed level 1, 2 and 3 cycle training.

Local Training Day - Cycle 1 - 27
MPS-GN132-Local Training Day - Cycle 2 - 13
MPS-GN133-Local Training Day - Cycle 3 - 7

Question

How many police officers are currently:

  1. trained for cycle duties and
  2. deployed on bikes in London?

Answer

  1. CO15 do not deploy officers on cycles. Any officers with authorisation would have bought it with them when they transferred from BOCU.
  2. Re currently trained and deployed on BOCU the same issue will apply of having to contact each BOCU individually and they then searching their records .
