Stop and Search - know your rights competition

Can you produce a catchy short video (Min 90 seconds, Max 3 minutes long) that demonstrates your rights when you are stopped and searched or asked to Stop and Account?

If you think you can, then now is your chance to prove it. Enter this competition and submit your video to your local Stop and Search Community Monitoring Group (CMG). What you submit is up to you and should be in your own words and pictures, but should not offend.

The time scale for competition entrants to submit entries to local Community Monitoring Groups has been extended to Friday 3 February 2012.

CMGs will complete the local judging process and submit the top two local entries to the MPA by Friday 2 March 2012. Judging of the final competition winners will be completed by 30 March 2012. Announcements of the winners will be made shortly after.

Competition prizes

1st prize Camcorder to the value of £1,000.00,
2nd prize Photography Vouchers to the value of £300,
3rd prize Photography Vouchers to the value of £200.

The winning entry will also be posted on ‘You Tube’ supported by the Metropolitan Police Authority and the Metropolitan Police Service and may be used to share the Stop and Search/Account message to communities across London.

Competition entry requirements

The competition is open to (and only open to), young people up to the age of 25.

Entries can be made using mobile phones, hand held cameras, film cameras etc but must be visual moving film recordings and submitted on a DVD.

Entrants will be judged on: the Content and Factual information in terms of Stop and Search/Stop and Account, Visuals and cinematography, Sound quality, any Special effects, Impact of the film to the viewer and Clarity of its message.

All entrants must also describe, in no more than 50 words:

• How winning the competition will help to support your local Stop and Search CMG? And
• How will you encourage more young people to get involved with the local Stop and Search Community Monitoring Group?

1. Competition entrance requirements:

The competition is targeted at, (and only open to), young people up to the age of 25.

Initial judging will take place through local Stop and Search CMGs and each borough will then submit the top two entries to the MPA/MPS for a final judging panel.

Members of the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) and Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) (and their immediate family members) are not permitted to enter the competition. Whilst CMG members cannot enter, family members and friends are permitted to enter the competition. In the event this occurs, CMG members must ensure this is declared and should exclude themselves from local judging.

2. The role of local CMGs

Stop and Search Community Monitoring Groups are a borough based group of volunteers (Chaired by volunteers and not led by the police) that work in partnership with the local police to examine the issues for Stop and Search on the borough. Local meetings are held with the borough police to discuss stop and search/account and is an opportunity to work in partnership with the local police to improve community understanding of stop and search/account and for the local police to listen to the concerns of the local community. It is also an opportunity to share accurate messages of what is going on in your borough and why.

In terms of the Competition, your local Stop and Search CMG will be responsible for engaging with local communities to:

Promote the competition in their areas
Engage with local schools/colleges and clubs and
Manage the local entries.

3. Announcement of winners:

The competition winners will be announced at a future Community Monitoring Network Special Meeting to be confirmed.
