Community Engagement
Community Engagement is a core priority for all police authorities. Police Authorities community engagement responsibilities have been outlined in a number of acts, including ‘The Police and Justice Act 2006’. This act requires all police authorities to make arrangements for obtaining the views of the community on policing the force area and the cooperation of the community in preventing crime. In addition to ensuring the public have a say in the police priority setting processes, police authorities are also responsible for monitoring the effectiveness of the community engagement carried out by the police service.
The ‘MPA and MPS Community Engagement 2010 – 2013’ lets people know what they can expect of the MPA and MPS in regards to community engagement. The commitment recognises that whilst the MPA and MPS community engagement work has developed and improved over the past few years with the introduction of Safer Neighbourhoods Panels in every ward in London by the MPS and the innovative scrutiny consultations carried out by the MPA, the MPA and MPS need to ensure that their approaches to community engagement remain relevant. The commitment lists a number of principles explaining how we will improve and develop our community engagement work.
